Lijiang, in northwestern Yunnan, is where China's mountain southwest meets a living ancient culture. Its Old Town is a car-free maze of cobbled lanes, canals and tiled Naxi houses — a UNESCO site that still breathes. Behind it looms Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a 5,600-meter glacier-capped range, and nearby lies the roaring Tiger Leaping Gorge. This Lijiang travel guide covers the Old Town, the snow mountain cable car, the unique Naxi culture, transport, altitude advice, food and budget. Pair it with our Dali guide for the classic Yunnan loop.
Why Lijiang Stands Out
Most Chinese old towns are reconstructions; Lijiang's is the real thing, continuously inhabited for over 800 years by the Naxi people. It is also a launchpad: within two hours you can be on a snow mountain, in a deep gorge, or in a quieter village that few tourists reach. For Yunnan travel, Lijiang is the adventure hub.
Best Time to Visit
March–May (spring): Wildflowers, mild 15–22°C days, and the clearest mountain views. The best all-round window.
September–November (autumn): Dry, sunny, golden and crisp. Excellent for the gorge trek.
June–August: Rainy season — lush but cloudy, with afternoon storms that hide the peaks.
December–February: Cold (near freezing at night) but clear; snow on Jade Dragon is at its most dramatic.
Avoid: The week of May 1 and October 1 holidays — the Old Town becomes a human river.
How Many Days Do You Need?
2 days (tight): Old Town + Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
3–4 days (ideal): Add Shuhe/Baisha and a Tiger Leaping Gorge day trip or overnight trek.
5+ days: Use Lijiang as a base for Shangri-La (Zhongdian) or the longer gorge trek.
The Old Town of Lijiang (Dayan)
The main Lijiang Old Town is a web of stone lanes fed by mountain-spring canals, with wooden Naxi buildings, bars, cafes and craft shops. It is free to enter but crowded by day. Wander early (before 9 AM) or after 9 PM for atmosphere.
Black Dragon Pool (Heilong Tan): A park just north with a classic postcard view of Jade Dragon reflected in a pond — best on a clear morning.
Mu Family Mansion (Mufu): The restored palace of the Naxi rulers, ¥40, worth an hour for the courtyards and hilltop view.
Sifang Street: The central square and the start of most lanes.
Shuhe & Baisha — The Quieter Alternatives
Shuhe is a smaller, calmer old town 6 km north, ideal for a relaxed afternoon. Baisha Village, 15 km north, is the most traditional — home to the Baisha murals (Ming-era Tibetan-Buddhist-Naxi art) and the best view of the mountain's summit without a ticket.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan) is a 13-peak range capped with glacier, sacred to the Naxi. The standard visit uses the cable car to Glacier Park at about 4,506 meters.
Cable car + park: Combined tickets ~¥200–300 depending on route; the Glacier Park cable car alone climbs to 4,506 m.
Blue Moon Valley (Baiyue Gu): A turquoise, mineral-rich lake basin at the mountain's base — included in the ticket and arguably more photogenic than the summit on a clear day.
Impression Lijiang: A Zhang Yimou open-air show with Naxi performers against the mountain backdrop (¥190–280).
Altitude warning: Lijiang sits at ~2,400 m and Glacier Park at ~4,500 m. Even fit travelers can feel breathless, dizzy or headachy. Buy oxygen canisters (¥20–40) at the base, ascend slowly, and skip the summit if you feel unwell. Avoid heavy exercise the first day you arrive.
Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia)
One of the world's deepest river gorges, where the Yangtze squeezes between Jade Dragon and Haba peaks. It is ~1.5–2 hours from Lijiang by bus (to Qiaotou).
Easy version: A half-day trip to the upper trail and the "Tiger Leaping Stone" viewpoint where the river roars through a 25-meter gap.
Serious version: The classic 2-day high-route trek (about 22 km) staying in guesthouses with balcony views. Strenuous but spectacular — do it only in good weather with proper shoes.
Naxi Culture: What Makes It Special
Dongba script: The Naxi use the world's only surviving pictographic writing system, still used in rituals. The Dongba Culture Museum (near Black Dragon Pool, ¥30) explains it.
Naxi ancient music: Evening concerts of centuries-old court and ritual music played on reconstructed instruments — haunting and genuinely traditional.
Matriarchal Mosuo: Nearby Lugu Lake (a longer trip) is home to the Mosuo, a matrilineal society — worth knowing about even if you don't go.
Getting to and Around Lijiang
By air: Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG) has direct flights from Kunming, Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xi'an. Airport bus to town is ¥20; taxi ¥80–100.
By train: High-speed rail links Lijiang to Kunming (~3–4 hrs), Dali (~2 hrs) and Shangri-La (~1 hr). The station is 20 min from the Old Town.
Getting around: The Old Town is car-free — walk. Buses and DiDi cover the rest. For the mountain and gorge, join a tour or hire a driver (~¥300–500/day).
Food: Naxi and Yunnan Flavors
Lijiang baba: A Naxi wheat flatbread, sweet or savory, eaten for breakfast (~¥5–10).
Cured pork rib hot pot (Lijiang guoqiao): A hearty clay-pot of aged pork ribs, the local comfort food (¥60–120 for two).
Yak/beef jerky and goat cheese (lushui): Tibetan-influenced snacks sold in the Old Town.
Tibetan yak hot pot & butter tea: Found in the higher- altitude restaurants; warming after the gorge.
Wild mushrooms: Yunnan's famous seasonal fungi — try a mushroom hot pot in summer/autumn.
Yunnan's mild, herb-forward cooking differs from the rest of China. To round out your kitchen at home, our home cooking recipe PDF covers the everyday Chinese dishes that pair well with these flavors.
Where to Stay
Budget (¥80–180): Old Town guesthouses and hostels — atmospheric but can be noisy near the bars. Shuhe is quieter.
Mid-range (¥300–600): Restored courtyard guesthouses with heating (essential in winter) inside or just outside the Old Town.
Luxury (¥1,000+): The Banyan Tree and Armani hotels sit at the mountain foot with private views.

Practical Tips
Altitude first: Arrive, rest, hydrate. Don't plan the mountain summit on day one.
Old Town comfort: Pick a guesthouse away from the main bar lanes if you want sleep.
Weather swings: Strong sun by day, cold nights even in spring — pack layers and sunscreen.
Extend the loop: Lijiang links naturally with Dali and Chengdu for a richer Yunnan-Sichuan journey.
